I've been really inspired to experiment with Kinetic Typography. Animated text to you and me. There's a lot about, but I find the examples below particularly slick. Also reminded me of the Stranger Than Fiction intro scene, where the combination of type and video is great.
Noise, Sŵn 08
The three day music and art festival, Swn, began today in Cardiff. So we attended the Interactive seminar, where the hot topic of the day appeared to be Social Media. Matthew Cashmore (Lonely Planet), Mel Kirk (Aardman), Matt Jones (Dopplr) and Tim Jones (Mint Digital), talked about how they were currently embracing it and other cool things. It was great to hear all of their experiences, but for me the most interesting talks came from Matt Cashmore and Matt Jones.
Matt Cashmore showed us the new Lonely Planet website with all of its fancy new features, and explained how the digital format was increasingly important to the company's direction. It takes six months for a book to hit the shelves after the Lonely Planet author has written the content, in print terms that's acceptable, but by opening up the company's content online and through digital formats, travellers are able to access the new information far quicker. It also enables them to get information when they are actually travelling, and Matt showed us the Lonely Planet Phrasebook Apps for the iPhone, and how they were also delivering information to other mobile devices.
The Mandarin Phrasebook App.

Matt Jones set up Dopplr, a service for frequent travellers to map their excursions, and compare their timelines with other Dopplr users so that you can see where your contacts will be, and arrange to meet if your paths cross.
In addition to the Social aspect, Matt also talked about his interest in data visualisation. The site contains all kinds of nicely designed charts and graphs to display people's activity, including the timeline which echos the logo, and the inclusion of an animal motif which is individual to the user depending on how much they travel. So if you travel a small amount you're a mouse, or if you're always on the go you're probably a cheetah. There were also a few other light hearted graphics thrown in like a glacier, which apparently travels just 1 mile per year.
Dopplr created this image by mapping the activity of their users over a year.

I also liked the explanation of the Dopplr logo which is made up of six squares, all of which are different colours. Everyone starts with the same six colours when they first sign up, then as they travel and interact with the site, the colours change and become representative of the type of travel they do and the locations they visit. I love that stuff.
The logo change itself seems to create a social buzz. Here's a few I found people sharing on Google.
